Role Description
- The Behavioral Health Session Interpreter supports communication between clinical professionals and K–12 students/families whose primary language is not English. The interpreter’s role is to accurately convey spoken communication during counseling sessions while preserving meaning, tone, and emotional intent. This position is not a teaching or counseling role; it is a clinical communication role that enables equitable access to mental health care.
- Provide real-time interpretation during individual, family, and group therapy sessions
- Interpret both directions (student/family ↔ clinician) without summarizing or altering meaning
- Preserve emotional tone and clinical nuance when translating sensitive topics
- Clarify cultural or linguistic concepts only when requested by the clinician
- Assist with parent meetings, intake appointments, treatment planning reviews, and discharge meetings
- Maintain session flow without engaging in side conversations or independent guidance
- Support communication during crisis or safety discussions under clinician direction
- Document interpreter participation per session requirements (attendance acknowledgment only; no clinical notes)
- Follow all HIPAA and FERPA confidentiality requirements
- Notify the team of scheduling conflicts and attend sessions punctually
- Scope Restrictions: Interpreters DO NOT:
- Provide counseling, advice, or personal opinions
- Modify clinical questions
- Explain therapy concepts independently
- Coach student responses
- Advocate for one party over another
- Conduct sessions without the clinician present
- Qualifications
- Fluency in English and at least one additional language (verbal and comprehension)
- Ability to interpret live conversations accurately and in real time
- Comfortable interpreting emotionally sensitive topics (mental health, family dynamics, safety concerns)
- Professional communication skills with children, adolescents, and adults
- Reliable internet connection and private workspace for telehealth sessions
- Availability before and after school hours (typically 7:00 AM – 9:30 AM or 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM EST)
- Experience interpreting in medical, behavioral health, or school settings
- Knowledge of cultural considerations affecting communication and mental health expression
- Familiarity with telehealth platforms (Zoom or secure video systems)
- Experience working with children or adolescents
- Interpreter certification (medical or community interpreting) — preferred but not required
