Job Description
Why arenaflex?
arenaflex is a global leader in air transportation, moving millions of passengers to hundreds of destinations every year. Our Operations Decision Science (ODS) team powers the complex logistics that keep our fleet soaring, using cutting‑edge predictive modeling, advanced analytics, and AI‑driven solutions. As part of arenaflex’s commitment to innovation, we are expanding our analytics talent pool with a remote, part‑time graduate internship that offers a real‑world impact without requiring prior professional experience. If you are passionate about turning data into actionable insights and want to grow alongside industry experts, you’ve found the right place.
Position Overview
The ODS department is seeking a highly motivated Graduate Data Scientist Intern to join a collaborative, fast‑paced environment. You will work directly with senior data scientists, contribute to machine‑learning model development, and translate complex datasets into clear business recommendations. This role is fully remote, part‑time, and designed for candidates currently pursuing a master’s degree in a quantitative discipline.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with senior data scientists: Partner on the design, development, and deployment of advanced analytics solutions for real‑time operational challenges.
- Data acquisition and preparation: Write and optimize SQL queries to extract large‑scale flight, crew, and scheduling data; clean, transform, and store data for downstream analysis.
- Exploratory data analysis (EDA): Conduct thorough EDA to identify patterns, outliers, and trends that can inform predictive models.
- Model building and evaluation: Apply machine‑learning techniques (regression, classification, clustering, time‑series forecasting) using Python, scikit‑learn, R, or SAS to solve operational problems such as demand forecasting, crew scheduling, and on‑time performance.
- Visualization and storytelling: Create compelling dashboards and visual reports (Tableau, Power BI, or matplotlib) that translate technical findings into actionable business insights for non‑technical stakeholders.
- Documentation and knowledge sharing: Maintain clear documentation of data pipelines, model assumptions, and experiment results; contribute to internal knowledge bases and best‑practice guides.
- Continuous learning: Stay up‑to‑date with emerging AI/ML technologies and propose innovative approaches to enhance arenaflex’s decision‑making capabilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a Master’s program in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
- Proficient in SQL and comfortable writing complex queries against relational databases.
- Hands‑on experience with at least one machine‑learning library or platform (e.g., Python with scikit‑learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch; R with caret; SAS).
- Strong analytical mindset with the ability to translate raw data into meaningful narratives.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; capable of presenting technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast‑moving environment.
- A commitment to safety, data privacy, and ethical use of information.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) or big‑data tools (Spark, Hadoop).
- Familiarity with statistical programming languages such as R or SAS for advanced analytics.
- Prior exposure to aviation or transportation data sets.
- Knowledge of data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, Looker) and storytelling techniques.
- Participation in data‑science competitions (Kaggle, DrivenData) or open‑source contributions.
Core Skills & Competencies
- Technical Proficiency: SQL, Python (pandas, numpy, scikit‑learn), R, statistical analysis, data wrangling.
- Analytical Thinking: Ability to dissect complex problems, hypothesize solutions, and iterate based on results.
- Communication: Clear, concise reporting; skillful in tailoring messages to technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Collaboration: Team‑oriented mindset; comfortable giving and receiving constructive feedback.
- Adaptability: Quick learner who can pivot as priorities shift in a dynamic operational setting.
- Ethical Awareness: Commitment to data security, privacy regulations, and responsible AI practices.
