Title: General Counsel Consultant (FinTech & AI Startups) – New York or Los Angeles (Remote/Hybrid)
Overview
We are a fast-growing startup consulting firm advising venture-backed companies across FinTech and AI. Our clients are building next-generation platforms in payments, lending, digital assets, applied AI, and enterprise SaaS. We are seeking an experienced General Counsel Consultant based in New York or Los Angeles to serve as a strategic legal partner to both our firm and our startup clients.
This is a high-impact, flexible consulting engagement ideal for a seasoned attorney who thrives in early-stage environments and understands the regulatory complexity surrounding financial technology and artificial intelligence.

Role Overview
As our General Counsel Consultant, you will:
Serve as outside General Counsel to multiple FinTech and AI startup clients
Advise on U.S. federal and state regulatory frameworks (financial services, data privacy, AI governance)
Support company formation, governance structuring, and board advisory
Draft and review commercial agreements (MSAs, SaaS agreements, vendor contracts, partnership agreements)
Provide guidance on SEC, CFTC, banking, and money transmission compliance (as applicable)
Advise on fundraising documentation (SAFEs, convertible notes, preferred equity rounds)
Develop compliance policies (AML/KYC, data privacy, AI risk governance frameworks)
Manage external law firms when specialized counsel is required
Support M&A diligence and strategic transactions
Ideal Candidate
Required:
J.D. from accredited U.S. law school
Active bar membership in New York or California
8+ years of legal experience (law firm and/or in-house)
Direct experience advising FinTech startups (payments, lending, crypto, banking-as-a-service)
Strong understanding of emerging AI regulatory considerations
Experience working with venture-backed startups
Preferred:
Prior General Counsel or Deputy GC role at a startup
Experience with cross-border regulatory matters
Familiarity with venture capital deal structures
Comfort working in fast-paced, founder-led environments
Engagement Details
Location: Must be based in New York or Los Angeles
Structure: Fractional / Project-Based / Retainer
Estimated Commitment: 10–30 hours per week (flexible based on client load)
Compensation: Competitive hourly or monthly retainer (please include rates)
Start Date: ASAP
