Position Details

Position Title: Extension Specialist/Veterinarian

Target Hourly/Salary Rate: Commensurate with Education and Experience

Appointment Full-time Equivalency: 1.0

FLSA Status: Exempt

Bargaining Unit Announcement: This is NOT a bargaining unit position with American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME).

Contingent Upon Funding: Not Applicable

Standard Work Schedule: Standard (M-F, 8-5)

If Not a Standard Work Schedule:

    Job Duties and Responsibilities: 100% Extension appointment. State-wide responsibilities will require significant travel in-state and out-of-state. Position can be located within the state of New Mexico, but preferred to be located on the main campus in Las Cruces.
  • Provide leadership in Extension programming focused on livestock health, disease
  • prevention, and public health concerns related to animal agriculture.
  • Develop and deliver educational resources, workshops, and training for Extension agents,
  • producers, and youth programs (e.g., 4-H, FFA).
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on animal health issues including zoonotic diseases,
  • regulatory compliance, and emergency preparedness.
  • Collaborate with veterinarians, livestock specialists, state and federal agencies, and
  • producer organizations.
  • Conduct applied research related to animal health and publish findings in peer-reviewed
  • journals and Extension publications.
  • Support Extension agents through consultations and field visits.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university service and professional development
  • activities.
  • Promote CES programs within the state to meet the LEADS 2025 goals prioritizing the program expansion to non-traditional demographics.
  • Foster collaborations and participate in activities and on research teams that support the work of the Center for Excellence in Sustainable Food and Agricultural Systems (CESFAS.)
  • Qualifications
    Required Education and Experience:
  • DVM from an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Five years of clinical practice including experience with livestock
  • Licensure (or eligibility for licensure) to practice veterinary medicine in the state of New
  • Mexico.
  • Demonstrated interest in Extension education and working with diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Experience in beef cattle, small ruminant, or other livestock health and production systems
  • relevant to New Mexico.

Equivalent Qualifications:

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced training (e.g., M.S., Ph.D., or board certification) in a related field.
  • Experience in adult education, Extension, or outreach programming in a variety of modalities including face to face, virtual and written.
  • Familiarity with animal health issues in arid/semi-arid regions.
  • Familiarity with Beef Quality Assurance programs and other animal welfare certifications

Environment: Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

Lifting Requirements: Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
